Our Group

Our  sustainability group consists of 4 people Ahmed ALQamzi, Saif ALSarraj, Ahmed ALDhubai, and Farzam Reza.
We were assigned a country/city which we were supposed to take their daily life and resources and try to improve the country/city to try to make it sustainable/Eco-friendly.
The country/city which we were assigned to do is Portland,Oregon in the United States.

BACKGROUND OF CITY


1.  Portland is located in the north-west region in the United States in the state of Oregon. Portland has different resources like for food: Avocado, Corn, Papaya, Corn and Nuts. For water sources: Precipitation, ground water, surface water, desalination, and for energy sources: Hydroelectric, coal, gas and renewable. Those types of resources can either affect in a positive or a negative way to make Oregon a sustainable or non-sustainable city. Oregon’s population which was calculated by the census of 2010 was approximately around 3,421,399 people. 

SMART CITIES


What does my city/country do best?  Name the top 3 categories.  These are areas that will require less/no change to meet high standards for sustainability.


1.      Uses renewable energy (solar and hydro)


2. Sets up initiative to ensure to clean water supplies


3. Various transportation system's to avoid the need a vehicle transportation (light rail system, bike friendly, and free electric plugins for electric cars.




What does my city/country do poorly?  Name the 3 lowest rated categories.  These are areas we will expect to see dramatic improvements.


1. Reduction in animals by dying or being injured because of littering and pollution.


2. Toxins (bacteria and chemicals) in tap water, eventually is effecting humans.


3. Most motor oil, trash, and cleaning chemicals end up in the river,which then goes through the tap water and then we clean our plates with that polluted water, so we get affected because we eat off those plates which are cleaned with this polluted water or bathe in it.

Government Policy:

Leaders of Oregon are chosen by their citizens electing them. People in charge of the government, representatives are chosen by the citizens voting for them. The government offers the citizens a public organization that helps people that are in need of health care, public right, and economical problems. In Oregon, Portland it's hard for bribery to happen because there is a higher achy system that each person supervisors the other person. There are also cameras and auditing systems that protects against bribery and corruption.

Consumer Policy:

In Oregon, Portland there are laws that are for consumers. Consumers have rights for owning something or buying stuff. There is a consumer policy that there should be personal information privacy for the online economy to grow. A consumer has a right to refund or exchange stuff if it was cheated.

Population Pyramid:

In Portland,Oregon  there are more males between the ages of 0-39 years old than females. There are more females between the ages of 40-85+years old then males. A prediction may be from what we see that, there are more males being born in Oregon. The fact that there are more in later years which let us assume that females can take care of themselves better and they maintain a healthier lifestyle than the males can  which benefits them and gives them a longer life.

City Plan:

Portland, Oregon is a multi-nuclei zone. It is easy for people to go to different places without needing transportation (car, bus etc.). Everything is in walking distance. The city is organized for each suburb to have the necessary facilities. The city runs on a grid system which makes it accessible by all forms of transport. The residential area is spread out and uses maximum space. The industrial areas are on the border of the city, ensuring pollution and disturbance is away from residential areas. Farming areas are located areas away from the main residential areas.
